Beyond The Box

Having a period in prison makes people suffer complex difficulties such as Menstrual Distress and are more likely to suffer Toxic Shock Syndrome due to making a DIY sanitary product.

In a recent Watchdog investigation in 2019, the government was advised that an urgent response was required to tackle systematic issues in UK prisons about hygiene and menstruation. The report revealed that only a handful of prisons had the Uk "hygiene pack" with basic supplies, and there is little privacy for the changing of period products and washing.  Beyond The Box is actively offering a solution to this problem through creativity and accessibility.

Beyond The Box is a creative recourse aimed at women who menstruate in prisons. This creative recourse was born after a two-month extensive research process looking into menstruation rights in the Scottish prison system.

Beyond The Box is currently in the process of being provided in the female wing at HMYOI Polmont.

Beyond The Box provides women with a range of Prison friendly period supplies, including pads and tampons ranging from light, medium and heavy supplied from the organisation TOTM. Inside the box is a booklet full of creative activities based on finding your voice, being empowered by periods and pride in your femininity.

Beyond The Box is in the process of developing to further research menstruation for Trans men in male correctional facilities and how this creative resource can evolve.
